AI assistants can help with everyday tasks, from organizing a to-do list to drafting a message. As these tools become more common, it’s worth taking a moment to think about what you share, especially when it comes to your personal and financial information.
Your security is important. A good rule of thumb is to not share anything with an AI assistant that you wouldn’t want someone else to see, like your date of birth, social security number or financial account numbers.
That’s why it’s important to keep your financial details out of AI chats, prompts and uploads. Protecting your information can help reduce the risk of someone using it to access your accounts or pretend to be you.
• Account or debit and credit card numbers
• Usernames, passwords or PINs
• One-time security codes
• Social Security numbers or other identifying details
• Information that could help someone access your online banking
This applies whether you’re typing information into a chat, sharing a screenshot or asking an AI tool to review a document. If a file contains private details, keep it out of the conversation.
It’s also smart to double-check anything an AI assistant tells you. AI tools can provide incomplete or inaccurate information, including answers about money. Before making a financial decision or taking action on your account, confirm important details with a reliable source.
If you’ve already shared sensitive information, take steps to protect yourself. Depending on what you shared, that may include changing a password, contacting your financial institution or watching your accounts for unusual activity.

Why you should be careful with AI and financial information?
AI platforms don’t all handle information the same way. Depending on the tool and its settings, what you type or upload may be stored or shared with other companies. Even if you’re using an AI assistant on your personal device, that doesn’t always mean the information you enter stays private. That’s why it’s important to keep your financial details out of AI chats, prompts and uploads. Use AI wisely and check the answers
AI can be helpful for saving time on everyday tasks, but it’s best to share only what’s needed. For example, you might ask for a general explanation of how budgeting works without including your account balance, income details or other private information. It’s also smart to double-check anything an AI assistant tells you. Simple ways to stay safer
